Anybody know of some good instructions for overclocking the CPU that can be understood by an amateur?

After reading those, I think I'll get someone in. I've got a Q6600 quad overclocked to 2.8 Ghz. I think I would like to get it up to 3 or thereabouts. Luckily cooling is no problem..

Just wanted to add as a postscript, if anyone is looking to overclock their CPU - it wasn't nearly as complicated as I thought. Of the two links cited in this thread, I found the one from Clunk.org the better as it was a lot clearer, especially explaining about the effect on RAM speed. Until I read that, I was going nowhere, as I'd omitted to alter the FSB/RAM clock ratio, or divider (it's described in a couple of different ways). Now I have my Q9550 stock speed 2.83 running stably at 3.4GHz. Also by delving into the BIOS I now have the coretemps at max load less than at stock speed, because the auto setting in the BIOS must have shoved vcore right up to near the max, so it cooled down once I'd set it at a lower stable value. So I have a 20% stable overclock. I could probably get it higher if I wanted, but that's enough for now. Very noticeable faster loading no blurries at all and virtually no stuttering if any.

Some Motherboard manufacturers, such as Asus, provide free overclocking tools for download from their website. They are are one click overclock tools and allow you to overclock (in the case of Asus) up to 20% and automatically set the CPU and RAM FSB to match the chosen %age overclock.

Check out your motherboard manufacturer's website and see what you find.

Does this tool overclock an Nvidia graphics card? Where is it obtainable from? cant see it on the Asus site. Thanks

Hi Tim,

No it doesn't I'm afraid. It's designed for overclocking the system (CPU, RAM, FSB, etc.). Its the ASUS AI Booster Utility and I think you need to navigate to either the utilities or downloads section of the website.

To overclock an nVidia Graphics card you can use the nVidia Performance Tool, which is part of the nVidia System Tools and can be downloaded from;

This will then be an integral part of the nVidia Control Panel under Performance/Device Settings.

Thanks, will give it a try. Have a Q6600 so no point not overclocking it but been turned off by the seeming complexity of doing it through the bios!

I am afraid that I cannot recommend this tool.
I have tried using the AI Booster on a number of occasions without any great success. You will find this experience well documented by others on various forums.
Manual overclocking, of intel core 2 cpus is not difficult if you follow the methodology laid out in the forum links I posted previously.
The most important thing to remember is to o/c in small increments, monitoring and stress testing at each stage. By this I do not mean running FSX with sliders maxed but using a proper stress test such as Prime 95 together with reliable temperature monitoring tools such as CoreTemp.
Do this and you can easily get a safe and stable overclock, but you cut corners at your peril.
